OVERARCHING AIMS OF ALERT’S CPD STRATEGY

Alert exists to have maximum peacebuilding impact. To achieve that impact we rely heavily on the talents and skills of our employees globally. We strongly believe that an effective global CPD strategy will contribute to building a more productive, focused and aligned organisation.

The aim is to have a CPD strategy which identifies the core professional development needs of Alert employees globally. By this we mean those skills which employees need to help Alert fulfil its organisational priorities and ultimately its strategy. By focusing and channelling the skills, knowledge, engagement, energy and judgement of our employees globally through a well-designed CPD strategy, it is intended that the sum of the organisation will be bigger than its parts.

For Alert employees, CPD will help them keep their core knowledge and skills up-to-date, contribute to their professional sense of direction, help build their confidence and credibility, and equip them with tools to cope positively with change. For Alert as an organisation, CPD will contribute to ensuring that standards across the organisation are high and consistent, and to the sharing of best practice and support. CPD will also contribute to maximising employees’ potential, improving moral and promoting greater work engagement.

While the primary focus of our CPD provision is our own staff, we recognize that some of the CPD materials which are produced may equally be utilized for building the capacity of our partner organisations and, in future, we will also explore the potential for marketing and generating income from specific online CPD provision.

WHAT IS THE CPD HUB AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

The CPD Hub is intended to be a one stop shop for CPD Provision at Alert. This is a multi-year project to provide all of Alert staff’s core CPD needs.  Every year we will work with Alert staff and leadership to identify CPD priorities to be developed and rolled out to our staff.

ALERT’S APPROACH TO CPD

CPD activities can range from formal educational activities such as instructor-led training courses, workshops or seminars, to more informal approaches such as work-based learning or mentoring. CPD can also include self-directed study such as e-learning courses and structured reading. To achieve maximum impact within the available budget, Alert’s strategy will employ an effective mix of approaches and draw wherever possible on in-house resources, taking account of proven research on how people develop:
